Sell Your Car’s Juice to the Electric Company!

October 6, 2011

Technology to Allow Electric Vehicles to Sell Excess Power” appeared on govtech.com  on October 3, 2011. The article discusses a new proposed technology that would allow an electric vehicle to sell its battery load back to the utility company. Presumably, this would allow electric utilities to draw on battery power to meet demand spikes.

This is an interesting read. It’s thought provoking in that the idea of drawing down chemical batteries is a bit counter-intuitive. After all, you’ve just pushed electricity across power lines, and stored it in a chemical battery, bleeding efficiency at both steps. Then you’re going to wait 12 hours, draw it out  and ship it back, bleeding more energy in the process. On top of that, you might come out of work and find your car’s fuel source half depleted.

Nonetheless, it seems likely that this will be a popular option, as power starved utility scramble to meet mid-day demand surges. A quick look at the article is well worth it.
