Little Blue Boxes

October 8, 2011

Today in Slate.com, appeared a reprint of a 1971 Forbes article by Ron Rosenbaum. “Secrets of the Little Blue Box” explores the underground culture of telephone hackers (“phone phreaks”). Slate chose to reprint the article because it is said that the article inspired Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak to begin creating illegal phone hacking devices.

This is a very long article, but it is well worth reading. It is a fascinating and compelling peek into the world of phone hacking in 1971. Ron Rosenbaum writes for Slate now, and has written several books. His 1971 article captures the sense of discovery and underworld tone of the culture vividly. You can find some more pieces by Rosenbaum on Slate.
